The purpose of this project was to try to turn around deterioration on an inner city street in a declining neighborhood. The City of New Haven Housing Office challenged New Haven Construction Corp. to take one street and try to turn it around. Vacant land was made available from the City of New Haven for one dollar US ($1.00). Sixteen new townhouse units were constructed on the vacant land along the street on an in-fill basis. In addition, three vacant buildings on the street were acquired and rehabilitated. The completed new and rehabbed units were sold to eligible buyers under the Dept of Housing and Urban Development Section 235 program. The total cost of the entire package was $912,000 and the new townhouse units were sold for $74,900. The project was financed by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority and was completed in 1986.
